What is the Grow It Forward Garden Blitz? The Grow It Forward Garden Blitz empowers residents to grow food and be part of a sustainable urban agricultural system. We provide a comprehensive approach to urban agriculture by selling and installing raised bed gardens at a low cost and by providing education and mentorship for gardeners. The garden boxes are installed over the course of one weekend by our team of volunteers. In addition to their garden boxes, new gardeners have a variety of educational opportunities, including our mentor program, which matches experienced gardeners with new growers

Where are gardens installed? Gardens can be installed in backyards, front yards, schools, libraries, community centers, social agencies, food pantries, shelters, and senior living centers WITHIN THE CITY OF MANITOWOC ONLY.

Purchase a garden: For $175, customers receive an 8’ x 4’ and 10” high garden box ($90 for a 4’ x 4’ x 10”), including delivery, installation, and soil. Boxes can be purchased for homes, schools, churches, or businesses. The garden boxes are installed over the course of one weekend (May 14-17, 2020 ).

When will my garden be installed? We cannot predict precisely when your garden will be installed because this is a volunteer-driven event. However, the process for garden installation looks like this:

  1. Volunteers will first install your garden box any day during May 14th – 17th. Volunteers will call you as they are heading to your site to install your garden. You do not need to be present for your garden to be installed, but please have the location marked out and unlock any gates that will prevent volunteers from entering the garden space. Don’t forget to bring your dogs inside!
  2. Volunteers will call you again when they return to fill your garden with 1 cubic yard of soil, any day after your bed is built, but definitely by May 17th.
  3. If you have questions or concerns about your garden during the BLITZ, you can always call Amber at 920-645-9467.

What to do before we arrive:

  • Make sure you pick a spot in your yard that gets full sun – at least 6 hours or more during summer.
  • Then, before volunteer crews arrive, mark the spot with corner stakes, or some other method that will be obvious to volunteers when they arrive (stones, flower pots, sticks, etc).
  • Some recipients also choose to lay down cardboard boxes or burlap over the site as a weed barrier to prevent grass from poking through into the garden. Anything biodegradable (made from natural materials like cotton or paper) should work – no plastic, as it can leach chemicals into your organic soil!
